Richard Powers teaches classes from 7:15 to 9 pm, partnered by Tracey. Richard is our dance music DJ from 9pm to 11:45.

7:15pm - The warmup dance at 7:15 will be the new Triskaidekaphobia Line Dance. Then since the first Academy Awards Ceremony was in 1929, Richard will teach a dance from that year, then bring it into useful 21st century dancing. Lingering Blues is actually one of the best of the golden age sequence dances, which includes authentic 1920s blues steps. Then you'll find those steps to be useful for today's freestyle dancing.

8pm - The Sway.  Richard often plays blues/fusion toward the end of the night at FNW. What can you do to that music? One easy yet limitless option is the Sway, which is a term given to one of the most common dances in the world, for decades now, yet it has never been taught in any ballroom dance studio or described in any how-to-dance manual.  How easy is it?  Easy enough for you to learn 20 variations in only an hour! Richard has only taught this once at FNW, ten years ago.

These are ALL-LEVELS CLASSES, no previous experience required. 

9:00 pm - Dance Party will feature Richard's favorite dance music from the movies.  Waltz, swing, tango, cross-step waltz, bachata, West Coast Swing, cha cha, BNP, salsa, Tokyo Polka, Lindy, NC2S, Romany Polka, hustle, and more!

For those who don't know about Richard Powers, he is one of the world's foremost experts in social dance. He has taught dance in Paris, London, Rome, Venice, Prague, Vienna, Geneva, Seville, Edinburgh, Krakow, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Tokyo and Kyoto, including 29 workshops in France (teaching in French), 28 in Japan (teaching in Japanese), and 22 in Russia (not teaching in Russian). Richard is currently the full-time social dance instructor at Stanford University.

Karn Verma

Karn Verma is a passionate dance instructor specializing in Argentine tango and Cross Step Waltz. His journey began at the age of seven, inspired by Michael Jackson, and later expanded during his studies at Stanford University, where he explored various social dances with Richard Powers' classes. After performing Salsa and Bachata with a Los Angeles-based company, he discovered Argentine tango in 2015, deepening his expertise with training in Buenos Aires and Rome under Pablo Veron. Karn has taught at Stanford's Bechtel International Center, Friday Night Waltz in Palo Alto, Jikoji Zen Center, and the Oshman Family JCC.

In 2022, Karn founded Feeling Flow, a dance school dedicated to fostering connection and mindfulness through movement. His teaching integrates meditation, focusing on authenticity, flow, and musicality. With a strong emphasis on community building, he has introduced innovative events like live music milongas and structured tango series featuring experienced local instructors. Beyond dance, Karn is also involved in technology and healthcare innovation while practicing Zen and hosting Japanese tea ceremonies.
